"But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave." Jesus Christ (Matthew 20:26, 27 NLT)

Leadership Nugget: Self Awareness (Part 2)

Dear leader,

There are two important aspect to self awareness that gives you a rounded perspective of who you are. This is knowing your identity and understanding your skills and abilities (your strengths & weaknesses). Your identity goes beyond your cultural, physical, educational background and other labels we or others put on us, and it goes to the essence of who our Creator says we are and our purpose on earth.

Understanding our true identity creates the self-confidence to be effective as a leader. As a Christ follower, my identity in Christ is clear. I am the salt of the earth and the light of the world. I am empowered to do all things through Christ my strength. I am wonderfully and beautifully created. I am a woman, the carrier of life and builder of nation. Who are you?

Society can try to define your identity for you; it tells you that you are poor, from a poor family. Your parent can try to define your identity for  you either positively ('you have the ability to get to the top') or negatively ('You can never amount to anything in life'). You can try to define your identity by who you think you are. Any label that is not defined by your Maker is not your identity. Your success does not define your identity. Others can tell you who you are but it does not mean that is your identity until you take the steps to self discovery.

What is your purpose on earth? To be born and then to die, working hard and procreating in between these two important events. Leaders who make impact; positive or negative have one thing in common, they understand their self identity. It might be defined according to their values but a God centered leader knows their identity starts and ends in Christ. They understand who they are, their purpose on earth and this becomes their life's mission statement.

Self awareness goes beyond understanding your strengths and weaknesses, but exploring  and having a true understanding of your purpose. I went on a journey of self discovery and ended up 'Discovering my Purpose'*.

How about you? What is your purpose on earth?
