Nowadays, I can't open the Word of God without getting a nugget of wisdom to empower me in my leadership journey as the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Recently, my eyes was opened to a revelation in two passages from the book Colosians and it created a significantly shift in my mindset about the right attitude to my work. Chapter 3 verses 7 and 23; 'And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus....work willingly at whatever you do (work at it with all your heart NIV), as though you were working for the LORD rather than for people.' (NLT)
As I reflected on these passages, I came to the conclusion that many times in my life, my attitude to work sucked. As a leader in the workplace, I have been frustrated, irritated, annoyed, angry, disappointed, miserable, stressed, woke up many mornings feeling down about going to 'that office' and many other negative emotional attitudes. The times I have been joyful, thankful, appreciative, exuberant, highly motivated has been much less than the other feelings. Thank God for the light of His revelation and that this was in the past, not now.
I come to the office now filled with joy, thankfulness, appreciation, positivity because I have realised that 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me'. And the realisation that those who are salt and light understands their role in life. It is to be God's representative anywhere we go and in whatever we say. We are leaders because we influence people by the content of our character and the quality (skill) of our hands (work). This is why, whatever our situation, especially in the workplace we must work as a representative of God and do our work with all our heart as though we are working for the LORD. This is the right and only attitude to work for a God centred leader. There is no way that when we give our all to our work and behave as a representive of Christ in our manner of speech in the workplace, that our light will not shine ever so brightly and the fruit of our labour will be a sweet smelling flavour in the lives around us.
It is a decision that you as a leader must make, to be God's Ambassador in the work or market place. If you are in a job that does not motivate you or make you fulfilled, as you wait on the LORD to promote you, keep reminding yourself that you are doing the job as unto Jesus; the One who expects you to do and give your best. After all, you are His representative!
Go on, live as the light of the world and the salt of the earth.
