Leadership Nuggets

"But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave." Jesus Christ (Matthew 20:26, 27 NLT)

Leadership Nugget: The insecurity of a leader

Dear leader,

Being a leader is a gift from God and this should make us feel secure because God that made you a leader, the salt of the earth and the light of the world has already empowered you to succeed in the role. Yet, many leaders become consumed with insecurity. They fear to lose their position and authority. They want to hold on to it forever. They will change policies and laws that would keep them in that position, forgetting that God gives and also takes away.

The sin of King Solomon made God split the kingdom and gave Jeroboam, the son of a widow ten cities out of twelve. Not only that, read what God Almighty promised Jeroboam,
"And I will place you on the throne of Israel, and you will rule over all that your heart desires. If you listen to what I tell you and follow my ways and do whatever I consider to be right, and if you obey my decrees and commands, as my servant David did, then I will always be with you. I will establish an enduring dynasty for you as I did for David, and I will give Israel to you. (1 Kings 11:37, 38 NLT)." Isn't this fantastic!

What a awesome promise. What an assurance from the only One who can decree to open and no one can shut, but did this makeJeroboam feel secure? No. He felt that if the people had to go to Jerusalem to worship at the Temple and to observe the annual festivals, they would turn their loyalty back to King of Judah, and they would not want him as their King anymore. He forgot the promised of God. So he made calves and pagan shrine for the people to worship, even appointing non Levine priests.

Of course, this is a no go area with God. He not only lost the kingdom, the bible said it resulted in the 'utter destruction of Jeroboam's dynasty from the face of the earth'. You can read the extent of God's judgement in 1 King 14:9-11. What a pitiful ending from such a great beginning.

A God centered leader has no reason to be insecure, unless you think you are where you are because of YOU. If you know God is the Source of your life, be secure in your leadership position. No one can displace you when you lead God's way. And if you are displaced, it's because the time is right for your next position.

This attitude of mind makes me so secure in myself. I am where I am because God wants me here. As long as I lead under the unction of the Holy Spirit, no one can displace me till God relocate me.

A leader that tries to manipulate people, processes, systems so that they retain their position will never have peace of mind because they would always see enemies where there is none. They will never trust anyone. They can never be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

Do you suffer from insecurity as a leader? You need to check your relationship with God. If you have not put God at the centre of your life, you will never feel or be secure. The next ambitious person is just behind you waiting for you to fall so that they can take your place!
