Leadership Nuggets

"But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave." Jesus Christ (Matthew 20:26, 27 NLT)

A common desire in the heart of everyone is to be successful. Nonetheless, we need to understand that success in itself is a journey and not a destination. Success does not happen by chance but requires deliberate and conscious effort. However, in order to definite if a person is successful, the individual will need to have a proper definition of success because success is relative and cannot be measured relative to other people’s material achievements. As an individual though, success is being all that God wants me to be at every phase in my life.

Unfortunately success is not attained by the practice of a principle, but rather the practice of a number of principles. In this short article, I will address two important and irrefutable laws of success; namely, integrity and tenacity.

Ever heard the saying, “Hard work can take you far but it is integrity that will keep you there”? Well, I believe so much in this saying. What then is integrity? The words that best replace this word will be honesty, reliability, trustworthiness, truthfulness, respect, discipline, character and straight dealing.

In my career experience, I have had the opportunity to have sat in management meetings where a decision had to be taken concerning an individual’s promotion within the organisation, and it is not uncommon to hear a statement such as “she/he is very good on the job, but she/he is not reliable or not honest”. As expected, the lack of integrity of such an individual has put a question mark on the opportunity for a promotion.

The second irrefutable law of success is tenacity. This can be described using words such as Not-quitting, persistence, not giving up, committed, perseverance and devotion. Tenacity in life and business has no substitute. In order to become successful, an individual has to be doggedly committed to his/her God given dream and refuse to give up easily; quitters do not win and winners do not quit. One should constantly bear in mind though, that there is no success without a temporary experience of failure, or a setback or disappointment. Therefore, there is the need to make a decision ahead of time that no matter what may come along the way in the journey of success, you are not quitting. To succeed you must not give up and when you run into an obstacle, make up your mind never to quit.

Finally, a word of advice to women with a vision and dream in their hearts:
·         Don’t be scared to start small
·         Make a choice for good character
·         Be devoted, committed to your business
·         View yourself as a problem solver
See you at the top!
